During national lockdown level 4 the Atterbury Theatre and Optog! got the green light to record live concerts in front of an empty theatre and the Charl du Plessis Trio was invited to perform a new selection of music. With bassist Werner Spies and drummer Peter Auret’s permission, I decided to call this special performance Ode to Joy. As part of the programme we included Peter’s new arrangement of this iconic Beethoven melody.
The Charl du Plessis Trio recently released a new album, Imagine, on Apple Music, Deezer and Spotify and wanted to feature some tracks from the album in the concert alongside older favourites from our repertoire. With the rise of online concerts and streaming services new fans discover music and ensembles they did not previously know and with this in mind we decided to offer these fans the opportunity to see a diverse selection of music by the Trio.
Ode to Joy includes the Trio’s version of I am Sailing by Rod Stewart in the style of JS Bach and, to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, new arrangements of his Fifth Symphony and the evergreen Für Elise. Other works feature composers like Duke Ellington, Antonio Carlos Jobim and John Lennon.
