Yesterday I returned from a very successful concert tour in China and on the flight from Hong Kong to Johannesburg I took a look at my calendar and realised the moment of truth has arrived:
In February I turn 40 and for quite some time the well-known saying ‘life begins at 40’ has been milling around in my mind. It is obvious that ‘apparently’ one becomes less fearful and subsequently have the courage to just be yourself and make your mark with the passing years. In my case this development revolves around my musical endeavours in the next chapter of my life. I intend to undertake concert tours with material different from what audiences have heard in the past 18 years of my professional career.
The safe space of my trio has recently been ‘disturbed’ after 10 solid years functioning as a unit: Hugo Radyn will relocate to Beijing, China in October and this will result in him leaving his post as drummer. The news was quite far reaching for me and reiterated, in a very powerful way, the unstoppable fluidity of life.
What for some people seem like a dead end and disaster will hopefully propel me to new heights of creativity.
So I undertake a number of solo recitals in the next 11 months with repertoire ranging from well known favourites from the classical and jazz canon but more importantly music which will be totally improvised. This exciting concept where audiences actively take part in the creative process is both challenging, fun and most rewarding for performer and audience alike.
A brand new DVD from my trio as well as a tribute album seem to be on the cards in this red letter year. So be sure to stay in touch and we will have more fun in music than ever before.
Wishing all my friends and fans a wonderful 2017!
