It is with great pride and humility that I can share with you that I have just been informed that my photo and dedication has been added to the wall of fame at the Steinway & Sons factory in Hamburg. I visited the factory for the second time in 2013 for a selection of a new model D-274 concert grand for the University of Pretoria and was asked to write a dedication. My obsession with Steinway and the craftsman and woman who make the world’s number one piano sound and work great must have come under your attention by now. On my first visit to the factory I was shown the famous selection room and the wall of fame where photos of all the finest pianists the world has ever seen grace the walls: Arthur Rubenstein, Vladimir Horowitz, Daniel Barenboim, Murray Perahia, Martha Argerich, Radu Lupu, Alfred Brendel, Mitsuko Uchida and Vladimir Ashkenazy to name but a few. The jazz greats on this wall include Diana Krall, Keith Jarrett, Harry Connick Jr, Billie Joel and even George Gershwin! I remember on my first visit spending quite a long time reading each artist’s dedication and admiring the working relationship of this esteemed company with my idols. At that stage I was very proud to be a Steinway Artist but never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be asked to join this great wall. So now I am there to inspire and to show my thankfulness to this company who is my partner on and off stage all over the world. My dedication is: I will never know where the magic of Steinway ends and the mystery of music begins – to me they are one. Thank you to Steinway Concert Technician Jan Höppner for the photo of the wall.
